Decorah Ordinances Affecting Retail Business
SIGN ORDINANCE
The City of Decorah sign ordinance includes the following stipulations
for businesses situated within the city limits:
That the sign not exceed 20 percent of the total surface area of the
building elevation to which it is attached.
That the sign not protrude more than 30 inches from the building.
No sign shall project above the roofline, or parapet.
That only one free standing or post sign referring to a use or uses
conducted on the premises may be erected. (Such signs shall not have a
surface area in excess of 50 square feet on any one side and not more than
two sides of the sign shall be used for advertising purposes.)
That the bottom of the surface area of such sign shall not be less
than 12 feet above the ground surface upon which it is erected.
Signs attached to the underside of a canopy shall have a copy area no
greater than 6 square feet, with a maximum letter height of 9 inches.
These signs are subject to a minimum clearance height of 8 feet from the
sidewalk and shall be mounted as nearly as possible at right angles to the
building face.
On awnings, signs consisting of one line of letters not exceeding 9
inches in height may be painted, placed, or installed upon the hanging
border of an awning.
A business name identification emblem, insignia, initial, or other
similar feature not exceeding an area of 8 square feet, may be painted,
placed, or installed elsewhere on any awning.
SIDEWALK DISPLAYS
Displays such as sandwich signs or sales tables are allowed on
sidewalks in front of retail businesses as long as the display protrudes
no further than three feet from the building. For questions concerning
