Just one man thoughts
I’m about to tell you a story that could give you nightmares or at least
make you think a little.
The President/CEO of Applebee Chamber of Commerce
called a meeting of all her staff to go over an upcoming major event of
the year. Each staff member in turn to review what they had done for the
upcoming event. The last was Portia the office manager. She reported that
reservations are up about 14% from last year, and last year, over 35% of
the reservations came in the last few days.
I’ve sent out an e-mail to:
• All sub-committee members
• Board of Directors
• To city officials
• All vendors for the past three years who have not signed up as of today
• To all who attended this event for the past three years who have not
signed up as of today
• Last an e-mail to all members, as a reminder of the event.
All e-mails have the time and date of the event. The
deadline for RSVP’s is Wednesday Noon. We must order vendors equipment by
4:00 pm Wednesday. We must order the meals not later than 4:00 pm
Wednesday (they will serve 10% over. If the RSVP doesn’t show, we pay. We
have once again added the statement – If you RSVP you pay!
All e-mails must RSVP to OfficeMgn@applebeeCC.com
no later than Wednesday Noon
At 5:01 Friday the meeting adjourned.
At 9:21 as our President/CEO came in on Monday
morning the young receptionist said we have some good news and bad news.
Portia’s father has taken very ill and she took off to Florida to be with
her dad. In her call she said she would see us Friday.
After a minute she asked the young receptionist, “What
is the good news?” The receptionist said, “That was the good news! The bad
news is Portia’s computer has a password which no one knows, and Glen our
computer expert said, ‘Unlike the movies he could not break the password.’
We called the bank and got her maiden name in hopes we could call her
dad’s house. Do know how many Jones are in Florida?”
The CEO looked at the staff, “What you are saying the
entire RSVP will come to OfficeMgn@applebeeCC.com and we can’t get the
e-mail until two after the event!
Question:
Does your Chamber use passwords for your computers or computer
programs? Is your staff e-mail password protected?
Here’s one mans thoughts:
Passwords are not all that bad and they do have a place
in the Chamber office. Security is always good. I came into the Chamber
late one night and found the janitorial service checking their e-mail or
so they said.
The Chamber management must have all passwords and they
should keep them in a safe place. What we do, is each staff member writes
down all their passwords and puts them in an envelope. Their names written
on the front and sealed, then sign their name on the flap. We place all
the envelopes in a manila folder and file under password in the file
cabinet that locks.
How
does your chamber handle computer security, especially passwords? Write
the ceo@chamber101.com
Now you want to know what happened at the Applebee
Chamber of Commerce. Everything turned out great. The first thing Portia
did after she saw her dad in the hospitals was call the Chamber By the way
Portia’s father was out of the woods by the time she got to the hospital.
This was a banner year for this chamber event.
