Members, Colleagues and Friends... What’s in a Title? The current trend in a job title for manager of the chamber is President. I think this is great if it is a large or metropolitan chamber. The title gives you more equality with the leaders of the business community. I was in the bay area at a major hotel attending an association meeting with executives of chambers. As we were in conversation, the guy at the next table asked about the name badges and something about the meeting. My friend answered, “This is a meeting of chamber executives across the state. The guy looking at my friend’s name tag, said, “I see you are the President of the Chamber. What do you do for a living?” My friend had to explain it several times before it registered. “Oh, you are the manager of the Chamber!!” I highly recommend if you are the President, that you set your title as President/CEO. If your elected President is the manager of a shoe store, for example, then the title of President is out because he has wanted to be the President of the chamber of commerce for the longest time. Some titles for the
Chamber executive are: More times than not, I’ve heard exec. introduce themselves as the manager of the chamber. Don’t let the elitists tell you what your title should be! You pick the title that fits you and your chamber. Today I like the title CEO of the chamber, if you have to explain Chief Exec officer then it’s, “you know the manager of the Chamber.” Just one mans thoughts What is your thoughts? I personally think the title isn't what's important, it's how you do your job. Our elected officers are President, VP, Secty and Treas and my "title" is Executive Director --the majority of my chamber acquaintances are also ED's -- works for me! - Stoneham Chamber of Commerce
My title is President and we have Chair of the Board for our Board of
Directors. I think President or President/CEO is the appropriate title for the full time paid executive of the chamber. The volunteer leader in my chamber is the Chairman of the Board. - Greater Effingham Chamber of Commerce & Industry You are absolutely right. We have 17 Chambers of Commerce in Hillsborough County and every chamber has a different title for their “CEO”! - Ybor City Chamber of Commerce
This article is pure garbage. - Steve Snyder, Director of Local
Chamber Services I was Exec Sec. for years and my Board changed it to Exec Dir. Being female, I felt that SECRETARY was because of my gender. DIRECTOR better describes the job. SECRETARY sounds as if you are NOT in a position to make decisions. - Waynesburg Area Chamber of Commerce I agree.- Palmdale Chamber of Commerce I agree with you completely! I earned this title long before I began this job! - Skokie Chamber of Commerce I just recently counted the number of positions within our Alberta Chambers Executives and 16 had the title "executive director" while 37 were called "general manager, office manager or manager". - Vegreville and District Chamber In my opinion the ONLY title that is acceptable is President/CEO. This is the business model and we are businees organizations. The Chief volunteer officer should always be the chair of the Board. - Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce You are so RIGHT ON! I have noticed every detail that you expressed. You get so much more respect when you say Exec. Director or CEO. Then you have to live up to the name, so it sharpens your senses too! - Director for Ephrata Chamber We changed our title from Exec. Vice President to President and CEO about three years ago. Didn't cause any problems or confusion in my community at all. We did it at the request of the TAB. - Hopkins County Chamber of Commerce I think you have a very valued point. Our manager is exactly that a manager and answers to the board. To me a person with the title President should be the one with the final say. We use the title Executive Director. Thank you for sending this to me. - Marble Falls Chamber of Commerce The most confusing title in our Chamber is the "President" of the Board. We are considering changing Pres. to Chairman of the Board. Our Executive Director title may be changed to CEO, but not near as important to change as the Pres. title. - Coalinga Area Chamber of Commerce Yep - I agree - I added the CEO after many people asked me where I worked or what I did for a living also. - Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce
