This message is from Tuesday, September 13, 2005 As reported in the paper today, and discussed at the Chamber Board meeting this morning, there have been ongoing attacks on transients in the Fairbanks area. Just this weekend another violent attack happened near Lathrop High. From an FNA perspective we have seen an increase in clients coming to our programs who have been beaten – both men and women. The attackers seem to be a small group of youth. The police have been most responsive to this issue. Chief Dan Hoffman is working with FNA and other local organizations to address this problem. One avenue we will be pursuing is to offer an award for information, through Crime Stoppers. As this is a community-wide issue that affects our town and its reputation, I strongly urge fellow Chamber members to join FNA in contributing to the Crime Stoppers for this specific issue. If contributions are made – no matter how small – we would like to announce contributors at a press conference tomorrow that will be jointly held by the FPD, FNA and others. Please feel free to call me with any questions – my numbers are below. Thank you everyone for demonstrating that Fairbanks truly is a community that cares.
