About the Adopt-A-Brick Program II Adopt–A–Brick plan will renew pavement as part of its ongoing effort to beautify Charlotte Amalie, the St. Thomas-St. John Chamber of Commerce's Charlotte Amalie 2000 Committee launched its Adopt–A–Brick program. The Chamber plans to use bricks to repave broken pavement in downtown Charlotte Amalie. It will start with the concrete in front of U.S. Post Office, and will move on to Cardow Alley and other parts of downtown as funds permit. To pay for the bricks, the chamber is selling bricks engraved with two lines of message. The messages, which have 16 characters on each line, can honor a family name, an anniversary, a marriage, a birth, or the memory of a loved one. The bricks cost $50 for residents and $100 for businesses. ``The proceeds will go to buy plain bricks," said Jose Ortega, a chamber staff member. The chamber needs to sell 500 engraved bricks to get the project started. To ensure an engraved brick right in front of the post office, orders must be placed at the chamber office by March 31. The office is located on Main Street above Mr. Tablecloth. Once the chamber whips Post Office Square into shape, it will step up work on Cardow Alley, which runs beside the post office from Main Street to the waterfront. The chamber will install benches, a brick sidewalk and improved landscaping. ``While the chamber will supply the materials, the Public Works Department provides the muscle". |
